『Cut Suits』には、サラリーマン風の衣装(スーツとワイシャツ、ネクタイ)を身につけた男性6名が登場し、ハサミを手に互いのスーツやシャツを切り合っていく様子が映し出される。チャイコフスキーの甘美なメロディーが鳴り響く中、徐々に裸に近づいていく男達の身体は、エロティックな視線を誘うと同時に、日本のホモソーシャルな男性社会からの解放を示唆しているようでもある。
衣服を切るというアイデアはオノ・ヨーコの伝説的パフォーマンス『Cut Piece』を参照したものである。だが本作においてそのアイデアは、暴力的な加虐/被虐の構図を示すためというよりは、多幸的な楽しい気分の中で、社会的な決まりごとやステレオタイプを脱ぎ捨てていくために使われている。

In Cut Suits, six men in businessman-like outfits (suits, shirts, and ties) are shown cutting each other’s suits and shirts with scissors in hand. As Tchaikovsky’s sweet melody plays, the men’s bodies gradually approach a state of nudity that entices the erotic gaze while also hinting at a kind of liberation from the homosocial male society of Japan.
The idea of cutting clothes is a reference to Yoko Ono’s legendary performance Cut Piece. In this work, however, this act is a means by which social conventions and stereotypes are shed in a euphoric, joyful mood, instead of presenting a violent composition that involves inflicting or receiving abuse.
